Happy 50th Birthday Lopez Museum

Posted by Rosie in Lopez Linkgraduatebloganniversary

TURNING 50 is always a big deal, and it is no less true for the Lopez Museum, founded on Feb. 13, 1960 by Eugenio H. Lopez Sr. to honor his parents Benito and Presentacion. The milestone merited a celebration befitting an institution that has, in the words of museum director Cedie Lopez-Vargas, "contributed so much to the development and furthering of Filipino culture and heritage." Do take the time to view the After the Fact exhibit at the museum, featuring the works of Antipas Delotavo, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Keith Sicat and Gaston Damag, and to check out the commemorative book "Unfolding" for a closer and more intimate look at one of Eugenio Sr.'s pet undertakings.

Another notable milestone is the 80th birthday of Lopez Group chairman Oscar M. Lopez (OML) on April 19. Next issue we'll find out what makes our chief keep going, as well as his hopes and plans for the Group.

In the meantime, mark your calendar for the matinee and evening show of "Undaunted," the much awaited musical that delves into the colorful history of the Lopez Group and its movers and shakers.

The end of the first quarter of the year heralds a sea change in that the kids are on vacation from school, and the temperature starts sizzling past the mid-30s-not always the most relaxing of combinations for many parents out there. Worse, this early, the El Niño phenomenon is already making its presence felt as farmlands and water reservoirs all over the country start drying up; some provinces in Luzon have already been placed under a state of calamity and losses in agriculture are expected to eventually reach hundreds of millions. Temperatures may even go as high as 40 degrees! For those living in urban areas, the immediate concern is saving water.

With hydroelectric facilities and thus, power supply also affected by El Niño however, home conservation efforts should also focus on the judicious use of electricity. Practice by turning off lights for one hour on March 27.

And lastly, plan your Holy Week with Griffin Sierra travel recommendationson this page. For your graduates, check out gift items from Power Plant Mall or consider building a nest egg for them . Congratulations to all 2010 graduates and to you, parents as well!

Happy Valentine and Keung Hei Fat Choy

Posted by Rosie in valentinechinese new yearblog

WHEN was the last time two of the Pinoy's favorite celebrations fell on the exact same day? Does this mean an extra special 2010? In what has become a tradition for us in LopezLink, we asked Zenaida Seva to share her forecast for 2010, also known as the Year of the Metal Tiger.

According to Seva, the last Year of the Metal Tiger, in 1950, gave us the Korean War, the development of the hydrogen bomb on the orders of US President Harry Truman and, in the Philippines, the arrest of the Hukbalahap's top leaders in October. But imbued with the Tiger's qualities, such as courage and boldness, and metal's characteristics-determination, resolve and fortitude-we hope to get through what is expected to be a tumultuous year. Find out what the months ahead hold for you. Happy Valentine's Day and Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Maligayang Pasko Kapamilya!

Posted by Rosie in Lopez LinkLopez Groupchristmasblog

AS 2009 draws to a close, we exult over our victories as a company, as the Lopez Group and as Filipinos in what has been a mixed bag of a year.

Our third-quarter financial performance defied expectations, given the prevailing economic environment. Benpres and First Philippine Holdings Corporation (FPHC) reduced their debts considerably, while ABS-CBN had one of its best years, not only financially with P5 billion in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), but also in terms of audience share. And contributing to the latter is the giant beater that is "May Bukas Pa"-although the implication of diminutiveness applies only to Santino, the boy who calls Jesus Christ "Bro." So successful are Santino and Bro in engaging the viewers that Christmas lanterns from ABS-CBN licensing, called "Parol ni Bro," are practically flying off the shelves in the ABS-CBN Store at The Loop, SM Kultura and other outlets. To give you a more comprehensive review of the Lopez Group year, we have compiled the highlights in our annual recap. Elsewhere in the world, Manny Pacquiao and social worker Efren Peñaflorida loomed large on the world stage-or in the boxing ring in the case of the former, when he demolished Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. Peñaflorida was chosen as the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year for his work as a "pushcart educator" with disadvantaged children in Cavite City. In 2004, Peñaflorida won as a regional finalist in the Youth category of the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awards, while his Dynamic Teen Company won the national award for the Institution category in 2007.

Start of "Ber" months

Posted by Rosie in myblogLopez Groupblog

LIKE everyone else, we're counting down the days before Christmas. It might only be the first "ber" month, but we have already received a gift in the form of the Lopez Group listed companies' fine financial performance in the first six months of 2009, and we'd like to spread the joy around. In fact, we're getting a leg up on the celebrations with a unique gift suggestion from Lopez Group Foundation Inc., which is recruiting warm bodies for a new group-wide volunteerism program. As per our tradition here in LopezLink, more gift ideas will be forthcoming in the run-up to the holidays.

With Christmas and several other holidays coming up, reunions are surely already marked in your or your balikbayan friends' and relatives' calendars-and that means a trip! This is the best time to know more about Griffin Sierra Travel Inc. (GSTI), our cover feature for the month. GSTI is a homegrown Lopez company and one of the leading names in travel in the Philippines.

Winners!

Posted by Rosie in MeralcoLopez GroupKnowledge Channel Foundation Inc.Asian Multimedia Publishing AwardsAMPA

That’s definitely what a lot of us in the Lopez Group were in the last few weeks. Benpres reaped honors for being among Asia’s best in corporate governance as cited by Hong Kong’s Corporate Governance Asia. This is the company’s second recognition in corporate governance from an international body. LopezLink was one of two Philippine winners in the “innovative corporate communications in a multimedia world” category of the recent Asian Multimedia Publishing Awards (AMPA), the leading publishing awards program in the region.

Meralco joins the Lopez Group winners’ circle with its win as one of FinanceAsia’s companies with the best corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. This latest win complements its previous triumphs in the “best managed” and “best in investor relations” categories.

Meanwhile, Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) goes full blast with its 10th anniversary celebration with several exciting activities lined up until its anniversary month in November. Another celebrator is Meralco Management and Leadership Development Center (MMLDC), which also turns 10 this August. MMLDC has something to offer everyone from 2 to 92 years old.

In the annual Lopez Group midyear conference in July, chairman Oscar M. Lopez (OML) and vice chairman Manuel M. Lopez (MML) shared that in steering the Group through these less than ideal times, they continue to abide by the example set by their late father, Eugenio H. Lopez Sr. Check out our story on p. 3.
August is the birth month of ABS-CBN honcho Gabby Lopez. Happy birthday, EL3! We remember as well Roberto M. Lopez, the youngest son of Eugenio H. Lopez Sr. whose “baby” when he was still with us was the Phil-Asia Assistance Foundation Inc. (PAAFI).

Remembering the Lopez Group Founder

Posted by Rosie in Lopez GroupGina LopezEugenio Hofileña LopezABS-CBN Foundation Inc.

For us in the Lopez Group, July has always been the month to remember our founder, Eugenio Hofileña Lopez. Don Eñing, as he was known, was born on July 20 108 years ago. In his 73 years-he passed away two weeks before his 74th birthday-he distinguished himself as a man of vision, blazing trails in such diverse fields as sugar milling, transportation, publishing and broadcasting.

Don Eñing was also known as a dedicated proponent and practitioner of corporate social responsibility, which role several of his grandchildren have since stepped into. For our special cover story, Lopez biographer Raul Rodrigo chronicles the work of the third-generation Lopezes as they live a distinct set of values in the big shadow of Don Eñing's legacy.
