First Gen donates P2.5M to solar power car project

FIRST Gen Corporation donated P2.5 million to support the nationwide road show of Sikat, a solar-powered car designed and produced by students and teachers of De La Salle University (DLSU).

Federico R. Lopez (FRL), First Gen president and CEO, formally handed over the donation to Ramon Agustines, chairman of the Philippine Solar Car Challenge Society Inc. (PSCCSI), a non-stock, nonprofit group formed to drum up support for the development of renewable energy in the country.

The recent handover ceremony, which was also witnessed by Brother Armin Luistro, DLSU president, coincided with Sikat’s launch of its nationwide tour. PSCCSI is collaborating with DLSU in the Sikat project.

From DLSU, Sikat will make stops at key universities and schools in the Philippines. During weekends, Sikat will be on public display at SM malls across the country. After the tour, the DLSU team will prepare Sikat for next year’s World Solar Challenge, an international race among solarpowered cars from all over the world through the Australian Outback.

The DLSU’s first solar car design, called Sinag, finished 12th in a field of 40 international entries during the 2007 staging of the World Solar Challenge.
