In a move that is expected to shake things up yet again in the local Internet industry, Lopez-owned Internet service provider SKYBROADBAND
is introducing in the market a pioneering broadband package that offers 5mbps in lightning speed at P999.
The consumable plan, which is aimed at light to medium Internet users who want faster speed at an affordable price, has a data volume allocation of 15GB.
At 15GB, the broadband provider said an Internet user can do any of the following activities at a given time: unlimited access to social networking sites for one whole month or download up to 3,750 songs/25 movies or watch 125 hours of non-stop YouTube clips, or consume 586 hours of VoIP talk time. These activities can be mixed and matched, depending on the Internet usage habits.
However, users can also avail of a top-up of P100 per 1GB for additional requirements – another first for the industry. A similar 5mbps plan, but with a 35GB monthly data allocation, is also available for P1999.
SKYBROADBAND said it is currently the only service provider that offers 5mbps for only P999. For the same price point, competitors are only offering 1mbps, it pointed out.
The cable broadband provider said it decided to raise the speed bar higher as its internal research showed that speed is always the first consideration regular Internet users attribute to a “good ISP.”
SKYBROADBAND said 1mbps is regarded as the minimum acceptable speed. With the new offering, however, ordinary Internet users can now have speeds believed to be ideal only for business use. Rodrigo P. Montinola
, head of marketing of SKYCABLE
said consumers who use the Internet extensively will get to experience enterprise-grade data speed for their Web applications, as well as for their communication and entertainment needs.
The faster data rate is also intended for multi-tasking, which the broadband provider said is a common practice nowadays, with multiple applications up at any given time.
“Today’s consumers navigate the Web with great proficiency and have come to assimilate Internet use as an integral part of life,” Montinola said.
SKYBROADBAND surprised the market in 2008 when if offered 12mbps when everyone else is offering a maximum speed of 3mbps. In 2010, SKYBROADBAND again offered the fastest speed at 112mbps, initially available in Rockwell, Makati.
