10.10.10 A Run for Pasig River,ABS-CBN Foundation managing director
Gina Lopez yesterday (11 Oct) announced that 116,086 runners participated in the
10.10.10 A Run for Pasig River, surpassing the world record of 110,000 set by the “Bay to Breakers” race in San Francisco, California in 1988.
Lopez said Sunday’s fun run spearheaded by Kapit Bisig Para Sa Ilog Pasig was not only a feat that the Philippines can be proud of, but it was also an event that showed how Filipinos can be united for a good cause.
“We did it! We succeeded because everyone—rich and poor, young and old—worked together. It didn’t even rain because people prayed,” said Lopez.
Lopez reported the official figure was validated and verified by the independent evaluator SGV. To make the feat official, KBPIP is now preparing the documents required by Guinness, from the registration to the video and photo documentation of the race and the reports submitted by the race organizers, SGV, and other agencies that worked in the event.
Lopez said Guinness may make the official announcement on 10.10.10 A Run for Pasig River’s new record in two weeks.
With the success of the fun run, Lopez said it will now be a yearly event.
“Every year we will break the record. We will keep running until the river is cleaned,” she said.
KBPIP will use the P12 million raised from the fun run to begin its cleaning operations on the esteros behind the Malacañang Palace, which flow into the Pasig River.
The group has successfully done dredging on
Estero de Paco, another tributary of the river, and relocated informal settlers there to a resettlement site in Calauan, Laguna, where they are given shelter and source of living through the Foundation’s BayaniJuan program.
Lopez encouraged the public to continue supporting KBPIP's activities.
“We need their support in all our efforts. Even on their own, they can also help. If they live near an estero, they can start cleaning it,” Lopez said.
