OML Center Weather Advisory: Typhoon Nona & TD (97W Invest) [16 Dec 9:30AM]

Typhoon (TY) Nona has slightly weakened and now packs 130 kph maximum sustained wind and 160 kph gusts. It is now over the West Philippine Sea.

A northwestward shift in movement resulted in heavy rainfall in NCR/Central Luzon last night. TY Nona will move slowly and its rainbands can possibly cover NCR, west and northeast Luzon regions until this afternoon.

Moderate to heavy rainfall in west Central Luzon and northeast Luzon, light to moderate rain for the rest of Luzon and Mindoro is expected today.

Expect light rains (to at times moderate) in NCR/Metro Manila that will continue throughout the day.

Satellite (Himawari, Japan) image shows TY Nona’s circulation to the west off Bataan, rainbands over most of Luzon.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains affecting ‪Laguna and the rest of Quezon province which may persist for 2-3 hours (PAGASA).

The tropical depression (per JMA/Japan) is located more than 1500 km east of Mindanao. JTWC have released a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TCFA) for the disturbance (Invest 97W) - it is expected to move west northwest slowly towards eastern Mindanao and dissipate before or during landfall by Friday evening (Dec 18). This will still change in the next few days.

TY Nona dumped a significant amount of rain in Mindoro, Metro Manila, Aurora, Cavite, Quezon and Rizal  in the last 24 hours (mostly last night) - some exceeding the average total December rainfall (normal rainfall is average of observed total monthly rainfall from 1981-2010).
