In celebration of National Children’s Month, we are called to reflect on how we can nurture safe, caring spaces for our youngest citizens to grow and thrive. This year, the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Council’s theme, “Connecting Minds and Hearts: Discovering Social and Emotional Learning,” reminds parents, caregivers and communities of their essential role in supporting children’s social and emotional development—skills fundamental to lifelong learning.
The early years, from 0 to 8, are critical for building these foundations. Research shows that 90% of a child’s brain development occurs before the age of 5, laying the groundwork for emotional intelligence, social skills and cognitive abilities. In the Philippines, children aged 0 to 4 years constitute approximately 10.2% of the population, while those aged 0 to 8 years make up about 20.4%. These formative years are essential for nurturing a child’s ability to understand and manage emotions, build confidence and form healthy relationships.
At Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI), we are committed to promoting holistic child development. Our efforts include producing high-quality educational content, such as the “ILY 1000” and “talkED” series, which inform teachers and caregivers on essential topics in ECD, equipping them with positive practices for child-rearing.
For children, our programs “Wikaharian” and “Ready, Set, Read!” focus on enhancing literacy skills in Filipino and English, respectively, fostering a love for reading and learning. Additionally, “MathDali” cultivates a growth mindset, encouraging children to view challenges as opportunities for learning.
Through on-the-ground programs like KCare, we provide hands-on training to caregivers and educators, ensuring that children receive the care, stimulation and education they need within a supportive community. On Nov. 28, we will host a parents’ conference focused on ECD, guiding parents toward informed decisions in childcare.
Our collaboration with government agencies further amplifies our mission. On Oct. 4, KCFI renewed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Education, strengthening our partnership to develop and distribute curriculum-based resources for ECD and basic education. We are also actively engaged with the ECCD Council to support upskilling programs, introducing early childhood educators to positive childcare strategies. Furthermore, as part of TESDA’s technical working group, KCFI contributes to crafting training regulations for child development workers, ensuring they receive comprehensive preparation to support children’s growth.
We do all this to build a brighter future for our children , strengthen their families and uplift our nation. This National Children’s Month, let us work together to build a society where every child has the oppor tunit y to flourish.
