Energy Development Corporation (EDC) turned over portable solar lamps to 80 beneficiaries in Brgy. Minoyan, Murcia, Negros Occidental who have no electricity in their homes.
The initiative is EDC’s response to barangay chairman Eric Espinosa’s call for the need for alternative power solutions for households in the barangay that still do not have access to electricity—a concern that he and Murcia mayor Gerry Rojas shared with EDC.
Beneficiaries who were predominantly located in far-flung areas of the barangay expressed gratitude upon receiving the solar lamps. Previously relying on traditional gas lamps, these households can now enjoy basic lighting that does not harm the environment and enhances safety and convenience in their daily activities.
“May this simple gesture light up hope for a better future for all recipients of the solar lamps who will now be able to study, work and bond with their family even at night,” said Norreen Bautista, head of EDC corporate relations in Negros Island.
“These solar lamps can help improve the quality of life in rural communities by providing a basic level of lighting for households. Thank you, EDC,” said Erwin Apua, executive assistant at the Office of the Mayor in Murcia.
