KBPIP to improve water quality of Paco ‘estero’
AFTER the relocation, dredging and riprapping work done in Estero de Paco,
ABS-CBN Foundation Inc.’s Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP)
is focusing on improving the water quality in the estero.
AFI managing director and concurrent Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission chair Gina Lopez said the game plan is to significantly improve the target esteros in three aspects.
“…I conjecture that 90% of dengue cases originate in dirty estero waters,” Lopez said. “Ninety-nine percent of the kids we relocated had malnutrition; 90% of the people had respiratory problems…. If we clean the estero, we significantly improve health, peace and order, and the economy.
“Once this done, my projection is that there will be a snowball effect,” she added. “We will have established a template on how to clean the esteros. Now the local government units and the private sector should work together so we can finish all the other esteros. Four years, that’s the timeline. The next two years is for the Pasig River.” Lopez expressed gratitude to KBPIP’s LGU- and private sector-partners for working together in rehabilitating the esteros.
Using the earnings from 10.10.10 A Run for the Pasig River, KBPIP will also begin its cleanup on the network of esteros behind Malacañang.
