In line with the celebration of National Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Week, Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI), along with other Lopez Group foundations and CSR officers, were joined by Edric Calma, KCFI vice president and member of the LCF board of trustees, and Roberta Lopez-Feliciano, managing director of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) and also a member of the LCF board of trustees, for the League of Corporate Foundations’ (LCF) annual CSR Conference and Expo at the Dusit Thani Hotel and the Glorietta Activity Center on July 3-5, 2024.
Sporting the theme “Reimagining a New and Inclusive Future,” LCF builds on the previous year’s CSR conference and expo theme, “From Extra to Essential,” integrating our continuous dependence on tech with the aim to spark conversations in technology advancements as well as to highlight the risks and opportunities of dabbling in the world of AI.
Representatives from KCFI, AFI, Lopez Group Foundation Inc. (LGFI), Energy Development Corporation (EDC), First Gen Corporation and other LCF members listened to the keynote presentation of Dr. David Hardoon, chief executive officer of Aboitiz Data Innovation, where he contextualized AI’s role in CSR. Hardoon pointed out that AI should not be a threat. CSR practitioners, he said, should find ways to utilize and integrate AI in the conduct of CSR and to sustain interventions.
“You don’t need a reason to do good; same thing about governance. People think, ‘But it’s going to stop us from progressing.’ No, just like CSR, governance is the mere principle to do it (utilizing AI) in a way that results in sustainability, that results in the ability to continue and to call out not when we can do something, but rather when we should do something,” said Hardoon.
‘EcoProject’ finalist trophy
The CSR Guild Awards, LCF’s annual recognition for LCF members’ outstanding CSR programs, recognized initiatives in arts and culture, disaster resilience, education, enterprise development, environment, financial inclusion and health. KCFI bagged a finalist trophy in the Outstanding CSR Project in Environment category with “EcoProject: Kilos Kabataan Para sa Kapaligiran Year 3.” EcoProject is a collaboration between KCFI and Unilever-Breeze, which reached and taught 133,178 learners in Taguig, Pateros, Marikina and Quezon City on climate change and proper waste management through eco-missions, community immersions and creative outputs such as jingles, eco Christmas corners, eco planters and e-comics.
This year, LCF came up with LCF Medal Awards for outstanding CSR projects by nonLCF members. First Gen’s entry, Learning Effectively through Enhanced and Evidence-based Pedagogies (LEEP)-Climate Change, a collaboration with KCFI which trained 170 principals and teachers in five areas where First Gen operates, was a finalist in the Outstanding CSR in Education category. LCF also welcomed Oscar M. Lopez (OML) Center to the league on July 4 through an induction ceremony.
The CSR conference had thematic breakout sessions on enterprise development, health and environment, education, disaster resilience, and arts and culture. KCFI had active participation in two sessions. The “Navigating the Future of Education: Technology’s Impact Across the Education Sector” session of the committee on education had Lyqa Maravilla, educational content creator and host of Knowledge Channel’s “Knowledge on the Go Live,” as one of the presenters. She spoke about the importance of accessibility of education by tapping into social media platforms to reach people from all walks of life, even those without formal education.
Moving as one
“Start thinking of creative ways… to address the public and even empowering those who already know. Marami pong puwedeng gawin with the networks we have, kasi po nasaan ang Pilipino? Online. So nasaan din dapat tayo? Online,” said Maravilla.
Calma, on the other hand, was the moderator of the Artificial Intelligence x Creativity x Inclusivity session by the committee on arts and culture.
The second day of the CSR conference saw the opening of the CSR expo where the LCF members set up booths that showcase their diverse advocacies. The Lopez Group had the biggest booth, with the group’s different foundations and CSR projects highlighted under a unified tagline: “We Move as One.”
KCFI displayed its Knowledge Channel TV (KC TV) and Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library (KC PML), and had games for booth visitors to win prizes such as heart-shaped display clips, stickers, books and notebooks. OML Center showcased its advocacy on the environment and climate change through its original films and publications such as environmental workbooks. AFI displayed informative flyers for its Bantay Baterya, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Collection, and Bantay Langis projects. Gina Lopez’s memoir, “I Am Gina,” and the Bantay Kalikasan book were also available for purchase at the AFI booth. EDC showcased their EDC BINHI program through books and merchandise, while First Gen had handbags that were produced by MAMAFASWAS, an IP organization composed of indigenous people affected by armed conflict in Lanao del Norte. In the middle of the Lopez Group booths were five cube totems on display as a centerpiece showcasing each foundation’s and CSR’s advocacy.
Ceremonial shredding
LCF’s Intervention for Food Security, Nutrition and Empowerment, or LIFE, was officially launched to help improve health and nutrition for Filipino children and prevent wasting and stunting. KCFI president Rina Lopez along with the LCF board of trustees and other guests graced the ceremonial shredding of the mid-upper arm circumference tape to symbolize the quest to end stunting and malnutrition of Filipino children.
Marlo Mortel, KCFI’s lead actor in its “ILY#1000” video series on nutrition for the first 1,000 days of life, hosted “Knowledge on the Go,” a quiz show that covers questions on topics in early childhood development, Filipino, English, math, science and Araling Panlipunan. Prizes were provided by LGFI, AFI, Aboitiz Foundation, Ronald McDonald House of Charities, EDC and OML Center.
Through the 2024 CSR Conference and Expo, LCF continues to recognize the unwavering effort of each LCF member acting collaboratively and/or individually in helping make the Philippines a better place. KCFI and the other foundations and CSR agents within the Lopez Group are one with LCF in the celebration of the 2024 CSR Conference and Expo and on businesses putting emphasis on CSR.
