Ever have days when hitting the gym doesn’t seem like an option? The Rockwellist talked with fitness trainers from Saddle Row and Move with Options and learned that even the pros have off days. So, whether you’ve lost track of your fitness goals, are struggling to start or are just having a rough day, read on.
Dana Uson, indoor cycling and rowing instructor at Saddle Row
What is your fitness mantra?
Exercise should never be a chore! My workout routine continuously changes, but it’s only ever packed with things I actually enjoy doing.
What do you do or tell yourself when you don’t feel like working out?
I remind myself: I do myself good whenever I choose to carve out time to exercise, especially since I sit at a desk or attend meetings all day, every day. I also make sure to get enough time to rest and would skip a day in the gym if it means I get a full night’s sleep.
What psychs you up for a good workout?
Nothing beats listening to hip-hop.
Is there anything around Rockwell Center that serves as motivation before you head to Saddle Row?
A good cup of coffee before I settle into the studio and the promise of ensaymada and cheese tarts after class!
Three things you tell students who need extra motivation
1. We strive for progress in our individual fitness journeys, never perfection.
2. The conscious effort to live a healthier lifestyle is one of the best investments you can make.
3. It’s important that they enjoy the time they spend in the studio. I teach both spin and row, and like to encourage clients to try both, especially when they start looking for more variety in their routines.
Topper Fabregas, indoor cycling instructor (specializes in resistance classes) at Saddle Row
What is your fitness mantra?
Show up.
What do you do or tell yourself when you don’t feel like working out?
I tell myself that as long as I commit to show up, I’ve already won. Even if you’re not feeling it today, commit and get your butt in the studio. Stay in the present, don’t beat yourself up for feeling lazy and the outcome may just surprise you. If it doesn’t, then hey, you showed up! That’s already enough.
What psychs you up for a good workout?
Music, music, music. I go through my different playlists on Spotify right before I teach or work out and I ride on that buzz.
I also love the energy around our studio. I just get in such a great mood whenever I step into Saddle Row.
Is there anything around Rockwell Center that serves as motivation before you head to Saddle Row?
The Nitro Cold Brew from Starbucks Reserve. Never fails.
Three things you tell students who need extra motivation
1. Set small fitness goals that will keep you motivated as you go through your fitness journey.
2. Try not to focus too much on the aesthetic benefits. Work on improving your strength and fitness. Notice the improvement in your overall health and well-being. The aesthetic changes should just be this really great plus!
3. Work out with a friend or a group as regularly as you can to keep you committed and in check.
Odessa Noriega, contemporary and classical Pilates trainer at Move with Options
What is your fitness mantra?
If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. It’s good to push a little outside your comfort zone. It’s a great way to discover your strengths and weaknesses and helps you set fitness goals, whether it’s losing weight or a complete lifestyle change.
What do you do or tell yourself when you don’t feel like working out?
On bad days, I rest instead of forcing myself to work out. Then I remind myself that I need to get up the next day and work harder to make up for lost time.
What psychs you up for a good workout?
Music! It sets the mood of my entire workout and it gets me through the difficult and tiring parts. …My go-to Spotify playlists are Slay the Weights & Electro Workout.
Is there anything around Rockwell Center that serves as motivation before you head to Move with Options?
First, all the coffee shops! Coffee wakes up my senses, whether it’s for a morning or an afternoon workout.
I also enjoy shopping for nice workout clothes and accessories because our studio is inside the mall. Plus, I always have access to grip socks and water bottles because Certified Calm is right next door.
Three things you tell students who need extra motivation
1. Love and enjoy what you do. When you see past the difficulty in every rep or set, it won’t feel burdensome. Stay positive!
2. Work out with a friend or a group. It’s more fun!
3. Always listen to your body. If it tells you to rest, listen. You don’t have to push yourself every day. You benefit more from setting realistic goals and sticking to them.(Story/Photos by:Jannine Sy)
