Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz returns to showcase both the chemistry and the talents of these two acclaimed favorites of the Philippine entertainment industry in the romantic melodrama film “The Mistress” as it airs on Cinema One on Sunday (July 14).
“The Mistress” tells the story of Sari (Bea Alonzo), who works as a suit maker to provide for her family. One day, while in a bookstore, she meets JD (John Lloyd Cruz), a hotshot with daddy issues whose father is cheating on JD’s mother. He also happens to be the hired architect for the renovation of the shop that she works in, and the two begin to develop a fond attraction for each other. However, what JD doesn’t know is that Sari is the secret mistress of a rich benefactor who, strangely enough, has the same family name as JD.
Of her challenges in taking on the role of Sari, Bea says, “By far, this is the bravest that I had to be for a movie because there were a lot of things I had to do that I never did for television or for film. It was tough.”
The role of JD similarly posed a different kind of challenge for John Lloyd. “My personal relationship with the character was very instrumental,” he said, adding, “my character is coming from somewhere severe. He has a very deep, wounded soul and there’s a lot that he wants to prove—also a lot that he wants to run away from.”
Also delivering commended performances for their roles in “The Mistress” were veteran actors Ronaldo Valdez and Hilda Koronel who had been in hiatus for 6 years and just came back to the country from the US to do the project.
In his review of the film, Philip Cu-Unjieng praised “The Mistress”, saying, “It’s the texture of the screenplay and the sympathetic depth of the characters that make it such an absorbing film.”
