Asian Eye Institute’s Dr. Robert Ang received the 2013 Certified Educator Award during the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) Annual Meeting held recently at the SUNTEC Singapore International Convention Centre.
Dr. Ang earned the recognition for his expertise and contributions in the field of ophthalmology. The APACRS named Dr. Ang, a refractive/LASIK surgeon, as the Global Resource Person for Supracor, being the only ophthalmologist in the world who has a vast experience in performing Supracor procedures.
Supracor, manufactured by Bausch+Lomb Technolas, is a laser procedure designed to treat presbyopia or loss of near vision. Presbyopia usually affects people who are in their 40s, 50s or 60s. It was previously an untreatable eye condition that could only be corrected by wearing reading glasses. Supracor eliminates the use of reading glasses by reshaping the cornea for both distance and near vision.
At present, Asian Eye Institute who introduced Supracor in 2011, is the only eye care facility in the country with the technology, allowing patients with presbyopia a more enjoyable and hassle-free life without need for reading glasses.
Dr. Ang has been performing surgeries and conducting various studies involving the laser procedure. Among his researches, his work on the use of Supracor in post-cataract patients received a Best Paper commendation from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) during its annual meeting in April 2013.
“Supracor enables patients implanted with ordinary monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) to go back to doing close work, such as reading small text or doing computer work, without the need for eyeglasses,” Dr. Ang says.
In September, a group of doctors from different countries will visit Asian Eye to observe Dr. Ang perform Supracor procedures.
