Run for Ilog PasigABS-CBN Foundation Inc. managing director Gina Lopez announced on October 11 that 116,086 runners participated in
10.10.10 A Run for Pasig River, surpassing the world record of 110,000 set by the Bay to Breakers race in California in 1988.
Lopez said the fun run spearheaded by
Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig was not only a feat that the Philippines can be proud of, but it was also an event that showed how Filipinos can be united for a good cause. “We succeeded because everyone—rich and poor, young and old—worked together.” ABS-CBN chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III, boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, and Dyan Castillejo joined the Pasig River run, while former President Fidel V. Ramos, accompanied by his wife Ming, fired the starting gun to mark the foot race’s simultaneous opening.
Vice President Jejomar Binay, Mayors Alfredo Lim of Manila and Antonino Calixto of Pasay, Metro Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino, El Shaddai leader Mike Velarde and Ballsy Aquino-Cruz were also among those who supported the cause. Lopez reported the official figure was validated and verified by the independent evaluator SGV. To make the feat official, KBPIP is now preparing the documents required by Guinness, from the registration to the video and photo documentation of the race and the reports submitted by the race organizers, SGV and other agencies that worked on the event.
With the success of the fun run, Lopez said it will now be a yearly event. “Every year we will break the record. We will keep running until the river is cleaned,” she said.
KBPIP will use the P12 million raised from the fun run to begin its cleaning operations on the esteros behind Malacañang Palace that flow into the Pasig River.
