The Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY) held its first concert for 2019 at the Sun Life Amphitheater in BGC Arts Center, Taguig in February. A pre-Valentine’s Day performance, the repertoire included classic pieces by Wagner, Handel and Schumann and local songs such as Rey Valera’s “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko,” one of the crowd favorites.
The concert began with the sunset as backdrop—the perfect setting for an early evening serenade for families, couples and children. This concert celebrated not only the OFY’s first performance of the year, but also officially introduced Ang Misyon Children’s Orchestra composed of the younger tier of scholars who show musical promise although requiring more training in playing their instruments. As part of the OFY members’ learning experience, they are exposed to different types of events and venue settings. Selected members were present at ABS-CBN in February to welcome Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, playing a few special pieces as she walked down the red carpet. Gray swayed to the music and engaged the crowd before proceeding to the studio. The young musicians continue to captivate the hearts of their audience when they perform, whether it is for a big crowd or an intimate gathering. As the summer season approaches, stay tuned for updates on upcoming events and concerts featuring the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth and the very promising Children’s Orchestra.
