Christian EsguerraChristian EsguerraABS-CBN News broadcast journalist and anchor Christian Esguerra was named this year’s Marshall McLuhan fellow, while Karen Davila and Deo Endrinal are among the honorees in the 2020 Glory Awards.

Esguerra was honored by the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines and the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility after the Jaime V. Ongpin Journalism Seminar conducted online, where he served as a panelist alongside fellow ABS-CBN journalists Mike Navallo and Chiara Zambrano. He is set to visit universities in Canada and the Philippines to lecture on topics about journalism.

Ambassador Peter MacArthur awarded the McLuhan fellowship to Esguerra, commending him for his “consistency in providing the public outstanding coverage of the most pressing stories of the day, knowledge of a wide range of issues, deftness in adapting to the changing platforms of the industry, and a desire to mold the next generation of media professionals.”

Esguerra anchors “Matters of Fact” that airs daily on the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC). He has a podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube called “Facts First.”

Meanwhile, Davila and Endrinal were recognized with four other distinguished alumni of the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) for putting out work that goes beyond “the usual” consistent track record of excellence.

Davila, the awardee for the broadcast journalism category, currently anchors “Headstart” on ANC.

Endrinal is the awardee in the television arts category. The head of the ABS-CBN content production unit Dreamscape Entertainment is behind many of the network’s hit programs on television and digital, including “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.”

The Glory Awards is organized by the UP CMC Alumni Association in honor of the institution’s first dean, Dr. Gloria Feliciano. The other winners this year are Dr. Rey de la Cruz (special education), Dr. Monina Movido-Escalada (development communication), Lutgardo Labad (arts and culture advocacy) and Criselda Yabes (literary journalism). (Story/Photos by: Kane Choa)
