As we mark Nutrition Month this July, we are reminded of one truth: if we want to build a smarter, healthier nation, we must begin with our children. Nutrition Month is more than a campaign about eating right. It is a national call to action—a reminder that real learning begins not just with books and classrooms, but with healthy bodies and supported families.
At the Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI), we know that to improve education in the Philippines, we must go beyond academics. A child cannot learn effectively without good health, proper nutrition and emotional care. Education begins at home, in the womb and in the first few years of life—when children are most vulnerable and most in need of support.
Science has proven that the gut and brain are deeply connected. A well-nourished child has sharper focus, better memory and stronger emotional resilience. Malnourished children, on the other hand, are often stunted physically and cognitively. They struggle to keep up, and this affects their entire future.
That is why early childhood development (ECD) is central to our mission at KCFI. We serve not only children, but also parents, caregivers, teachers and community leaders who shape their growth. Our programs include “Dok Ricky, Pedia,” “Payong K-Lusugan” and “Kwentong Pambata,” educational shows focused on health, hygiene and daily well-being; “TalkED,” a curated series based on our national ECD conference, featuring experts on child nutrition and mental health; and “I Love You 1000,” a partnership with the National Nutrition Council and the Department of Health focusing on the first 1,000 days of life, from maternal care to newborn development.
But we do not stop with media. We go directly to the heart of Filipino communities. Our KCare program is a threeday ECD training delivered in barangays. It equips child development workers (CDWs), parents, barangay health workers, nutrition scholars and local officials with the skills to nurture children in a holistic way. This is grassroots empowerment, grounded in science and compassion.
On July 7, we launched a new upskilling program for CDWs in Baras, Rizal, in partnership with the Rotary Foundation, Rotary Club of Makati Premier District, Rotary District 3830, Rotary Club of Cheonan Dongho (South Korea), Rotary District 3620 and the Early Childhood Care and Development Council.
This six-month initiative includes in-person sessions, regular mentoring and multimedia learning. It also provides 10 brand-new ECD video lessons, 42 Knowledge Channel TVs with portable media libraries and six specialized training modules designed for caregivers of children ages 3 to 4.
With these combined efforts, we aim to raise the bar for caregiving in early childhood. We are helping CDWs grow in knowledge, confidence and professional excellence—all in the service of our children.
Did you know that 90% of brain development happens before age five? Even before birth, the brain begins wiring its emotional, social and learning foundations. That is why singing to your baby, reading to toddlers and playing simple games are more than just bonding moments—they are acts of education.
Every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy, confident and curious. Every family deserves the support to make that possible.
